Donald L. "Don" Finney Obituary Donald Lee “Don” Finney, 90, of Herrin, IL passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2025 at SIH Memorial Hospital in Carbondale. In early life, Don served in the Army National Guard. He worked as a cutter for Smoler Brothers for 12 years prior to becoming a Herrin Patrolman. Don also worked as a facility technician at GTE and retired after 30 plus years. In addition, Don worked with the Herrin Fire Department as a volunteer fire fighter for 30 years. He was born on November 6, 1934 in Williamson County, Illinois to Elmer & Mary (Story) Finney. Don is survived by his two daughters, Debra & Brett Green of Palm Desert, CA and Donna & Frank Hichens of Columbia, MO; three grandsons, Evan & Madison Green of Chicago, IL, Kellen Green of Palm Desert, CA and Justin & Zoee Campbell of Columbia, MO; sister-in-law, Linda Finney; niece, Sherri & Pete Moake and their children; nephew, Russell Finney & Carla Butler and their children; and special friends Larry & Rhonda Jackson. Don was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Melvin Finney. Cremation will be accorded and a graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2025 at Herrin City Cemetery with Rev. Ralph Brandon officiating. Interment will follow services. Memorial Donations and checks may be made to the “Learn Not to Burn Program.” Envelopes will be available at the cemetery.
